what can I do to help maximise my chances of getting a seat on the plane, flying standby?
Okay I'm flying from Kansas City to Charlotte to visit some friends. My friends dad works for Mesa airlines and got me cheap stand by tickets. I've never flown stand by before and I understand that there is a chance I can get stuck at O'hare airport in chicago during my connection. How does standby flying work and what steps/precautions can I take to insure the best chances of getting a seat on each of my planes and what do I do if no seats are available??

Standby is first come first serve. So to make sure to get on if there is an opening is to get there as early as possible to get on the standby list first.

Standby is not really first come first serve if he got you a Buddy Pass, which it most likely is - its based on seniority and you are at the very bottom of the list. There really isn't anything you can do to maximize your chances of getting a seat other than having your friend's dad check the loads and list you on a flight that is wide open.
