What do U think illegal day Laborers say ban on seeking work on the street violates their civil rights?
The lawsuit filed against Costa Mesa in U.S. District Court comes after police dressed in plainclothes posed as employers in September and arrested a dozen workers, sparking the ire of immigrant rights groups. It's the latest in a series of lawsuits filed by day labor advocates against California cities that limit workers' right to solicit employment on street corners. Advocates said laborers have a constitutional right to free speech and cities can't bar them from seeking employment and simultaneously let activists wave signs against the Iraq war. "Our core constitutional principles of equality and freedom demand that a day laborer enjoy the same right to free expression as a political activist or a member of a charitable group," Belinda Escobosa Helzer, a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. Costa Mesa's city attorney did not immediately return messages seeking comment. The city located 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles passed the ordinance banning work solicitation in 2005. Costa Mesa also shut down a labor center where workers previously congregated and stepped up immigration enforcement by partnering with federal agents. It is the eighth federal lawsuit filed in California by the ACLU and Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund over such ordinances in the last 12 years, Escobosa Helzer said. The previous lawsuits have settled or been won by workers, she said. One was appealed and is pending a ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The lawsuit comes as day labor advocates said they have seen more American citizens lining up at labor centers around the country because of the recession. Workers in Costa Mesa said they had yet to see Americans join them, but labor centers elsewhere in Southern California have. "It is a rogue city in terms of protecting civil rights," said Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which is also representing the workers. On Tuesday, two dozen workers and their supporters marched in Costa Mesa to voice their opposition to the ordinance. "They don't want us to be on the corner and we just want to work to sustain our families, and ourselves," said Jose Anaya, a Mexican immigrant who has sought work as a day laborer in Costa Mesa for the last three years. http://www.mercedsunstar.com/Nation/story/1295957.html Why are these places given illegals full instant US citizenship rights but without requring them to be actual citizens with legal documents stating by law they are allowed to work here legal/illegal does it matter anymore to them ? By the way do our tax dollars pay these places ? Evelyn j.. What the UN states is what they think. We are not at this point allowing the UN to run this country...

Because the ban also bans citizens and legal residents from seeking work in such a manner. The rights of those citizens are being violated.
2 :
Their civil rights? What gives them these rights when they enter the country illegally. I do not understand this mentality.
3 :
Citizens have rights, illegal aliens do not have rights.
4 :
i think it similar to what happend to the oakies during the great depression and the dust bowl everyone has rights as stated by the UN http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/

Good post. As much as I skeeve them, most anti-war protesters are American citizens and have rights afforded them by our constitution. These illegals are not citizens, and therefore are not entitled to the same rights as citizens. I don't mean that they shouldn't be afforded certain rights, as would any visitor to our nation, but being non-citizens they are, by law, barred from seeking employment. Just as someone from Britain here on vacation would be barred from working. It has nothing to do with their being hispanic illegals; it does however have something to do with non-resident aliens working here in the first place. No special rights for illegals!

Loitering laws apply.

How about telling them the law about loitering

This Trojan Horse is a couple of million times the size left as a gift for the city of Troy. You don't have to go far for the answers, just look to the “real racist†groups like The National Council of La Raza (The Race), MeCHA, LULAC, and a terrorist group called the “Mexica Movement.†Their official platform says: “We totally reject all illegal European Colonial Squatter Occupation Borders on our continent. We also reject Colonialism’s right to keep stealing the wealth of our lands. And we reject their artificial divisions of our people!†This is a group that thinks America is their property, and anyone who doesn’t fit their description should leave the country. What it also means is this is a hateful, racist and terrorist group, and it should be denounced immediately. Of course, we will be called racist. What Americans are fed up with are the millions and millions of people who come here and do not want to assimilate or learn the language. People who send their earnings “home†to another country. People who are turning 2 bedroom apartments and single family homes into illegal camps housing up to 100. People who are stealing I.Ds and Social Security numbers from American taxpayers. People who are turning entire neighborhoods and city sections into Tijuana’s, where half the store signs advertise “llanteras usadas.†People who are killing American citizens at the rate of 27 per day through murder, drunk driving, etc. People who expect and demand their kids to be taught in Spanish, and don’t care what we Americans think. People who since 2000 have desecrated our National border parks with 25 million tons of trash. People who decline to buy auto insurance or set enough aside to cover their liabilities. People who use our expensive hospital emergency rooms as their cold and sniffle clinics. The real complaint here is that those “lazy Americans†who still try to “follow the rules†find themselves increasingly squeezed and taxed, fingerprinted and regulated and licensed and strip-searched, while the illegals thumb their noses, disregard our wishes, and give the finger to our laws. Why would they want “reform†of a law they’ve shown no intention of obeying? What they really want is “belly up immigration surrender†- free instant citizenship rights to all government welfare benefits for any of their people who can get here. Why is it dangerous that we can’t discuss these things frankly in the open, without crippling euphemisms that disguise what this is really about? We’ve all seen the news coverage with millions of illegal aliens waving Mexican flags in our streets demanding to be awarded citizenship. We’ve heard the threats from the their seditious leaders elected to our offices. We’ve seen the American flag burned, or hung upside down beneath the Mexican flag. They insist we’d be nothing without them. They call it “Reconquista.†The sleeping giant is starting to rise from its decade’s old slumber. They are artificially encouraged by tens of millions of their illegal illegitimate brethren that victory is within reach. The coming conflict with these parasites in parasite’s clothing will end with the American citizens authorizing a mass banishment that will make President Eisenhower’s “Operation Wetback†puny in comparison. The illegal alien network support system and Mexican government will counter with “you can’t possibly deport 12 million people. Yes we can deport 30 million people. I suppose the counter stopped in the 1990s when we first heard the 12 million figure. There will a national movement. Legislators and Lawmakers will be forced to write new restrictions. To be an illegal alien in the United States will become difficult. People will self-deport. Those who don’t will be arrested, and imprisoned. The national bleeding will then stop. I will no longer have to press 1 for my own language

Hey Heidi, I'm assuming you are requesting generic brands, and this is still financially hard on you, understandable. This is what I was able to come up with for you from here in CA. Go to this website, it is your state governors site, and she has implemented this discount card for prescription medications, too ALL AZ residents. http://azgovernor.gov/coppercard/index.asp If that site does not work, just find your state governor, Jan Brewer's site, and look for a link to the card there. Oh, the card is totally free of any charge at all, and offers the discounts that will hopefully help you. Hope this helps a bit? Take care!
